Focus Beats: Music to Help You Stay Focused While Studying

Just as every student is unique, so is the way they study. For instance, do you choose to listen to music as you study or do you require complete silence because even the slightest sound will disrupt your concentration?

If listening to music is your choice, you are not alone. In fact, there has been a long-time debate on whether music is beneficial or a hindrance to learning.

Initially included as part of The Mozart Effect, it was thought that music helped maintain focus and increased one’s ability to successfully study. However, our music has changed and today’s kids are not likely listening to Mozart or other classical musicians. Researchers are now claiming that there is no benefit to listening to music while studying and that, in fact, it could hurt your focus – and ultimately your scores. (Of course, it is important to keep in mind that this is very subjective – and is dependent on factors such as the type of music, how loud you are listening, etc.)

Nonetheless, each student has his or her own routine. And, if it includes listening to music, then you may be interested to learn which tunes will help you stay focused.

  • Instrumental music of all sorts. This can even include instrumental versions of today’s hottest hits.
  • White noise. An audible frequency that can tune out everything around you.
  • Relaxation or nature sounds. Believe it or not, hearing these types of sounds can reduce stress and anxiety while increasing your focus and concentration.
