HOLISTIC EDUCATION: What Are Study Mantras?
A “mantra” is a word, sound, or phrase that is continuously repeated. It aids in concentration and focus. It originally stems from Hinduism and Buddhism, but has become more popular among people today who are looking for alternate or holistic ways of dealing with life. Mantras differ, depending on what you choose to use them for. For studying? You can either focus on mantras that will offer you peace and stillness or you could practice a mantra that provides an intent – like a positive statement to increase your inner strength.
“Mantras of Intent” are meant to increase your confidence. In fact, they are meant to make you feel downright powerful. What they are not meant to do is bring you down. For example – you would never use a mantra that says, “I’m never going to be who I want to be”; or, “I will fail this test”. Instead, you want something empowering, like – “I WILL SUCCEED”; or, “I AM POWERFUL”; or, “I CAN DO THIS”.
Another method for mantras is to focus on a sound, such as om or aum. These are sounds that, with practice and listening, can begin to match the vibrations of the universe. As you clear your mind, you will solely hear this sound – nothing else.
When you finally have your mantra, find yourself a quiet and comfortable place. You want to avoid distractions entirely, if possible. Then, begin to focus on this mantra – the phrase or sound – and do so with purpose. Steady your breathing and begin clear your mind. Let everything go as you begin to transform yourself. Become your mantra. You may find this difficult at first or maybe even think it is a waste of time. Keep practicing – it will be worth it.
