How Stress Affects Studying
Flights reactions and serious fights can be useful in many scenarios; however, stressful conditions can be very detrimental amongst students. Regardless of whether you are experiencing an unstable environment at home or taking complicated tests, the brain shouldn’t experience too much stress. That is because the brain starts to react differently when it is subject to stressful situations. Conversely, stress can have a negative impact on your studies. With this being said, here are few interesting facts about stress and its impact on your learning experience.
The Chemical Reaction
The brains response to stress depends on many neurotransmitters and hormones. Several hundred chemical reactions happen during stressful situations. For example, the child’s hypothalamic pituitary gland starts to release glucocorticoids (steroid hormones) when danger is sensed. This affects the body’s rate of metabolism, heartbeat, immune system and skin. In fact, the adrenal gland starts to release catecholamine neurotransmitters like epinephrine, dopamine and norepinephrine. These are powerful chemicals that trigger many fearful responses. Anxiety and alertness increased due to the presence of neuropeptide S. In the midst of such chemicals, studying will become a challenging process.
Stress stimulates an unpleasant bodily environment that doesn’t permit deep learning. This is why you wouldn’t remember what you studied during stressful conditions for a very long time. Think about this, will you be able to learn the multiplication table when you are falling down? Certainly not! This might sound like an obvious statement. However, there is so much more to it!
Affected Memory Storage
Stress can have a negative impact on your memory storage too. A study that was carried out at the University of California Irvine stated that stress cuts down the amount of information transferred from the short term memory to the long term one. This happens because a series of synapses are associated with the transfer. And, these synapses become slow with stress.
Creating an Idyllic Environment
This is why teachers are expected to maintain a stress free environment for students. They should try and cut down stress as much as possible. Regardless of whether it is coaching, mentoring or tutoring, students should be kept in environments that are void of anxiety. Also, self-awareness should be encouraged carefully. Students should be trained to work on closed lesson plants that can help them master the topic effortlessly. Also, they should know about time management. Research declares that “time” has the power to trigger or inhibit stress.
